We all bleed red – but the red blood is categorized into different blood groups based on antigens and antibodies. Whether for a medical emergency, blood donation, or pregnancy planning, knowing your blood type is essential. Let’s decode the science behind blood groups, how they are tested, and why it’s crucial.

Types of Blood Groups: ABO System

Blood groups are primarily divided under the ABO system, based on the presence of antigens on red blood cells (RBCs):

    • A Group: Has A antigens, B antibodies
    • B Group: Has B antigens, A antibodies
    • AB Group: Has both A and B antigens, no antibodies (universal recipient)
    • O Group: No antigens, both A and B antibodies (universal donor)

    Rh Factor: Positive or Negative?

The Rh factor is an additional protein (antigen). If your blood cells carry it, you’re Rh-positive; if not, you’re Rh-negative. This gives rise to 8 common blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, O-.

    Why it matters:
Incompatible Rh factor during pregnancy or transfusion can cause immune reactions or complications like haemolytic disease in newborns.

    Why is Blood Typing Important?

    • Safe blood transfusions
    • Pregnancy planning
    • Medical records & emergencies
    • Organ donation & transplant compatibility

A mismatch can trigger an immune response, potentially causing severe complications. That’s why correct blood group testing is vital.

    How Is Blood Typing Done?

    1. Forward Typing

    • Antibodies (anti-A and anti-B) are added to a blood sample.
    • Clumping indicates the presence of that antigen.

    2. Reverse Typing

    • Serum is tested with known A or B blood to confirm the result.

    3. Rh Typing

    • Anti-Rh antibodies are mixed with the sample.
    • Clumping = Rh-positive; no clumping = Rh-negative

Do You Need Preparation for Blood Group Testing?

No preparation is needed. It’s a simple, painless blood test done in any certified lab—or at home with Mendzone’s diagnostic service.
